I know that buying wooden furniture can be a daunting prospect

as there are so many different types and finishes to choose from.

To begin with, you should understand that all solid woods are divided into softwood and hardwood.  The distinction is not dependent on strength but is based on the biology of the tree in question.  Hardwood trees lose their leaves seasonally while softwoods keep theirs all year round.

Pine is a popular softwood, light in colour with prominent grains and knots, giving each piece a unique look.  If bought unfinished it can be painted, stained or covered with a clear varnish.  It is suitable for many items of furniture including tables, chairs, bed frames, wardrobes and shelf units.

The quality of pine furniture varies enormously.  Well-constructed pieces can last for decades, however.  Although the knots are one if its attractions, beware of items with a great number as too many knots can weaken a piece.

Pine is a sturdy wood but can be susceptible to scratches and dents.  As with all woods it can warp if exposed to high humidity and moisture.

If you live in the Gloucestershire area and are considering purchasing some pine furniture call in and see us at the Furniture Factory Outlet.  We will be happy to discuss your requirements and show you what we have in stock.
